She is a best-selling author, podcast host, retreat leader, therapist turned mentor, Yoga Teacher trainer, and tequila connoisseur (not really, but she does enjoy sipping on a good pour).
Let’s settle this once and for all, because I get asked this question constantly. You’re an entrepreneur who wants to host retreats profitably, but you’re not totally sure retreats are even the right move. Maybe a workshop feels safer. Maybe a mastermind sounds more “scalable.” So which one actually makes you the most money?
Short answer: it depends on what you’re optimizing for. Long answer: keep reading, because the format you pick determines your margins, your workload, and how fast you can turn this into recurring revenue instead of a one-off event you host once and never again.
These three get lumped together constantly, and it’s costing people money. Here’s the actual breakdown.
None of these formats is automatically more profitable. What determines profit is whether you’re pricing for the format you actually chose.
On a per-hour-of-your-time basis, a well-run mastermind often wins. You’re not managing a venue or feeding twenty people three meals a day. You’re facilitating conversation and accountability, which costs you almost nothing to deliver once it’s built.
But retreats win on total revenue per event, and they win on something masterminds can’t touch: transformation guests can feel in their body. That’s what people pay a premium for, and it’s what turns a one-time guest into a repeat guest, a referral machine, and eventually a member of your workshop or mastermind too.
The entrepreneur who wants to host retreats profitably isn’t choosing retreats because they’re the easiest path to margin. They’re choosing retreats because a well-priced, well-filled retreat becomes the top of a business ecosystem – and that’s how you turn retreats into recurring revenue instead of a single transaction.
The one thing is pricing for profit, not for break-even. Too many retreat leaders build a budget, add a small buffer, and call that the price. That’s not a pricing strategy. That’s hoping.
A profitable retreat is priced with your margin built in from day one – not squeezed out after expenses if you’re lucky. Once you price for real profit, a retreat can out-earn a workshop and a mastermind combined, because you’re not just selling a weekend. You’re selling an experience people plan their year around and tell their friends about.
I do want to be super f’ing clear though; stop treating retreats, workshops, and masterminds as competing options. They’re not competitors. They’re stages.
This is exactly how you turn retreats into recurring revenue. One well-run retreat can feed both of the other formats, and suddenly you’re not asking which format makes more money. You’re running all three, and they’re funding each other.
Not necessarily. A workshop can build your list and test your messaging, but plenty of retreat leaders sell out their first retreat off a warm circle with no workshop at all. Start where your audience already trusts you.
They can be more profitable per hour of your time because overhead is lower. But retreats typically bring in more total revenue per event and create the kind of transformation that fuels referrals and repeat bookings.
You can host at a venue and include lodging as part of your retreat price, but you cannot bundle or sell travel arrangements like flights without a licensed travel agent certification. Always route travel logistics through a partner who’s properly licensed.
Start with your true costs – venue, food, staff, marketing, your own time – then build your margin in before you set the price. If your price only covers expenses, you haven’t priced a business. You’ve priced a hobby.
Eventually, yes, most profitable retreat businesses end up running some version of all three. But you don’t need to launch them all at once. Start with the format that fits where your audience already is, then build out from there.
