Let me guess; you already have a coaching business. A program, a membership, a group container, maybe a podcast and an email list. Clients are getting results. And somewhere in the back of your brain there’s a little voice saying, “I should do a retreat.”
Then the overwhelm kicks in. Venues. Contracts. Pricing. Who would even come? Do I need a whole new audience? A whole new brand? A whole new business?
No. Babe, no.
If you’re an entrepreneur who wants to host retreats profitably, the biggest advantage you have is the business you already built. You are not starting from zero. You’re adding a room to a house that already has a foundation, plumbing and people living in it. Let’s talk about how to make money with retreats by plugging them into the model you already run.
A mistake I see over and over: a coach with a solid online business plans a retreat like it’s a completely separate thing. A new theme. New audience. With new messaging. Zero connection to anything they already sell.
Then they’re shocked when it’s hard to fill and/or barely breaks even.
By the way breaking even is not success. A retreat that sits off to the side of your business has to do all the heavy lifting by itself. A retreat that’s built into your business gets help from everything around it: your content, your list, your clients, your offers.
So before you pick a single venue, ask yourself one question: Where does this retreat live in my client journey?
There are three spots that work really well for online coaches:
Pick one. You can add the others later. But pick ONE so your retreat has a job.
Every entrepreneur who wants to host retreats profitably needs three things: people who trust them, a clear transformation, and a way to reach buyers without spending a fortune. Guess what? You already have all three.
The easiest retreat seats to sell are to people who already pay you. They know your style. They’ve gotten results. They don’t need ten emails to decide if you’re legit. Before you post a single thing publicly, tell your current clients first. Give them early access. Watch how fast seats go.
You don’t need to invent new content. Take the framework you already teach and ask: what part of this would work ten times better in a room together, without distractions? That’s your retreat. The online program teaches it. The retreat makes it stick.
Look at your best-performing posts, your most-asked questions, the exact words your clients use in DMs. That’s your retreat messaging, already done (more on messaging in this week’s podcast, which is linked below…trust me, it’s a good one).
A warm email list, even a small one, beats a big cold audience every single time. You don’t need 50,000 followers. You need 10 to 20 of the right people who already know and like you.
A one-off retreat is a nice weekend. A retreat built into your model is a revenue stream. Here’s how to turn retreats into recurring revenue without burning yourself out:
This is the difference between “I hosted a retreat once” and “retreats are one of the most profitable parts of my business.”
You would never price your coaching program at cost. So why do so many coaches price their retreat to “just cover expenses”?
Here’s the simple version of how to price for profit:
One quick legal note while we’re here: you can host a retreat and sell the experience, but you can’t bundle and sell travel, like flights, unless you’re working with a licensed travel professional. Keep airfare off your package and let guests book their own travel.
And remember, wellness travel isn’t a fad. Wellness travel is one of the fastest growing travel markets out there. People are already spending money on experiences like the one you’re about to create. They might as well spend it with you.
No. Most coaches fill their first retreat with 8 to 15 people, and a lot of those seats come from current clients and past clients. A warm email list and an engaged community matter way more than follower count.
If you want the easiest first sell, start with current and past clients. They already trust you, so you spend less time and money on marketing. Once you’ve run one, you can create a front-door retreat that brings in new people.
Your retreat should usually be priced at or above your core online program, because it includes in-person access, lodging, food and a deeper experience. Start with your full costs, add your time and profit, then make sure the price reflects the value, not just the expenses.
Host it on a consistent annual or semi-annual schedule, connect it to the offers before and after it, and open registration for the next retreat during the current one. When your retreat is part of your offer ladder, it feeds your business instead of being a standalone event.
Not unless you’re working with a licensed travel professional. Selling bundled travel like airfare without the right licensing can get you in legal trouble. Keep flights separate and give guests clear travel guidance instead.
You already did the hard part. You built the business. Now let’s make your retreat the most profitable piece of it.
